Mandatory Individual Gear

  • Whistle
  • Compass
  • Knife (1.5” or greater blade)
  • Waterproof Lighter (Disposable lighter in zip lock is OK.  Just make sure it won’t leak
    – you’ll likely be getting wet)
  • Emergency Blanket
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Aerial flare
  • Wool or synthetic cold weather hat
  • Synthetic long sleeved top
  • Synthetic long leg bottom
  • Waterproof jacket (must have taped seams – NO ponchos)
  • Fleece pullover (100g minimum)
  • Container to carry at least 2 liters of water
  • Dry bag large enough to carry all mandatory individual and team gear (Suggested that each team member carry lightweight/waterproof dry bag as a pack liner)

  

Mandatory Team Gear

  • First Aid Kit**
  • Water purification system
  • Trowel
  • Cell phone

 

Required Gear for Specific Legs

 

Paddling

  • PFD – type 3 minimum - PFDs will be checked before teams are allowed to enter the water.  If a team member does not have the correct type of PFD you WILL NOT be allowed onto the water.  If you have questions about your PFD please see a RACE OFFICIAL (Not a volunteer) at the pre race meeting to verify your PFD is sufficient.
  • Paddle
  • 5 Cyalume type light sticks (Minimum 5 inches)
  • Canoe (Kayak for solo competitors) – Canoe must be plastic, Royalex or similar and must be between 15 and 18 feet in length to be ranked officially within you category.  Kevlar, Carbon Fiber or Aluminum boats are allowed but you will not be ranked officially within your category.  Solo racers will be allowed to you whatever type of boat they would like.  All three-person and two-person team members must be in the same canoe.  Support crews are responsible for transporting the boat for the duration of the race.  If your team needs to rent a canoe a limited number of boats will be available through CBS Sports in Morganton.  To reserve one of these boats call Brian Searcy at 828-437-7016.  The boats will be available for pick up on Friday afternoon (CBS sports is approximately 2 miles from the location of the pre-race meeting) and can be returned Sunday afternoon.  A special discounted price has been negotiated for rental of the boats for the weekend.    

 

Mountain Biking

  • Mountain Bike (No cross or road bikes)
  • Bike Helmet
  • Front mounted white light (High powered headlight is recommended)
  • Red mounted rear light
  • Extra Tube (2 per team or one per solo – Patch kit also recommended)
  • Repair kit / Multi-tool (1 per team)
  • Pump/CO2 inflator (1 Hand pump or 4 spare CO2 cartridges)

 

**First Aid Kit

  • 4 - 4X4 gauze pads
  • 3” ace bandage
  • roll 1” waterproof medical tape or duct tape
  • 3 doses of pain killer (Tylenol)
  • 3 doses anti-inflammatory (Advil, Ibuprofen)
  • ½ ounce antibacterial ointment
  • 4 alcohol, betadine, or antiseptic swabs
  • moleskin
  • tweezers
  • sunscreen
  • lip balm
